Using the knowledge I have gained in the past 7 years of running Bandana of the Month Club, let me help you take your design from start to finish.
For our made in the USA option we can either print on our top quality Japanese cotton blanks, or the standard USA grown and sewn cotton blanks. Each of our bandana blanks is hand-cut and handstitched in the USA to ensure a top quality end product.
Our contract screenprinters use waterbased and discharge inks to ensure a minimal handfeel that is better for the environment. We work with trusted screenprinters on the East and West coasts depending on your location.
Minimum is 12 bandanas. No samples. If you are interested in feeling the fabric beforehand, you can order a sample blank with approval.
JAPANESE COTTON VS. USA GROWN/SEWN COTTON BLANKS
USA GROWN/SEWN
The USA grown/sewn bandanas are not manufactured by us, they have an overlock edge and are just your standard issue bandana. This is our most economical option. They are cut and sewn by machinery (I have seen it in action, very cool!), but in order to facilitate this process they starch the fabric during the dyeing process. This makes for an initial hand feel that is a bit stiff. Once the bandana is washed, it softens considerably. The threads used to weave this fabric are open end spun which produces a coarser, fuzzier fabric that is known for its durability and ability to withstand washing and wear. It is commonly used in workwear, and it is well suited for a bandana fabric in this regard. It will continue to get softer with increased use and washing. The exception to this is the natural/undyed option, which is soft from the get go, as it doesn't get dyed/starched.
JAPANESE COTTON
Our Japanese cotton bandanas are also made in the USA. I import the fabric directly from the mill in Japan and then it is hand cut and sewn into blanks with a folded and stitched hem right here in the ozarks.
This fabric is made of ring spun yarn which is created through a more refined and more expensive process, producing a softer, smoother fabric with better drape. While not as heavy-duty as open-end cotton, ring-spun cotton is still durable and can withstand regular wear and washing. Its softer feel doesn't compromise its longevity. We offer three fabric weights and our lightest weight Japanese cotton fabric is put through a natural process called mercerization that increases fiber strength. These premium bandanas come at a higher price point because it is quite simply a lot more labor intensive and expensive to produce them.
